I live in a small Alabama town… actually, I live NEAR a small Alabama town. I live in an area with a name & a post office, but we are not a town or a city. I don’t think we are. We don’t have a mayor or a town hall — but we have a post office.
Anyway, I digress.
I love small town life. I grew up in the city and small town life fascinates me. After over 15 years living next to a small town, it still makes me smile when we close down the main road through town — a US Highway for the Christmas parade — and I do mean SHUT IT DOWN. If you happen on this parade, there’s no getting around it, just stop and enjoy.
I smile when the majority of the people I see downtown I know by name — and usually know something of their family.
I smile when a horn honks and it’s a friend waving furiously, holding her thumb & pinkie finger to her face in the universal ‘call me’ sign.
I want to share my smiles with the bloggy world. I’m starting a new feature — we could call a ‘weekly’ feature, but let’s not get all crazy and legalistic. My PLAN is to post weekly, but you know how those PLANS can go.
So we’ll start slow and hopefully it will be weekly, but no pressure (I crack under the pressure).
I want to share life in small town. The little things like:
- the small town hair salon
- what ‘where are you from?’ really means
- high school sports
- understanding the term ‘your people’
- going to a ‘sanging’ (and yep, I spelled that right)
- County fairs
- Covered dish dinners
And I could just go on and on and on, but I won’t. Aren’t you glad?
I’ll just leave you with this…. a picture of one of the bridges just outside of town. Not a bad looking place, is it?
Looks like a great place to sit, read the Word, or just take a walk with a friend.
MY fave part of living in our smaller town is the fact that each year they open up a manhole in one of the intersections in town and plop atree in it, decorate it and there ya have the town tree. Also, there is a Nativity on the lawn of the firehouse … which also happens to be the City Municiple Building – Ya know, where the MAYOR’S office is! Good stuff!
Plus, people say Merry Christmas!
Love it!
Mary,
I LOVE this. I too love small towns although I have never had the privelage of living in one. My honey and I are actually property shopping and hoping to build a new home in a small town soon.
I will enjoy following this!
Bless you friend,
Pat

I love small town life. Our small town has grown and no longer “small” but I remember “back in the day”. It was wonderful. I look forward to reading these posts.
You have a post office?! Apparently we did …. once. And I love your bridge. Looks like our river although we don’t have a roof.
I lived in a small town starting as a sophomore in high school. More like a desert hole since I grew up in Az. It was a shock to me to go from city(Scottsdale) to dirt roads and a 28 mile bus ride to school. I didn’t like it but I did enjoy some things about it. The closest store was almost 10 miles away. Crazy! Your small town sounds more lively than my experience. I appreciate friendliness. It’s hard to come by in bigger cities. I guess that’s why I loved meeting all of you at the bloggers’ retreat. I felt the Southern love…
🙂
Oh, I so understand your introduction of where you live! I too, live near a small town. We are an *unincorporated area* – fancy, eh? We boast a post office here too. It burned down once; but it has been rebuilt. My dear grandmother occasionally mentions the time she got the signed mail… We have no stop lights in our area. I laughed out loud when I found out the water department is open 2 afternoons a week for 2 hours! And my grandmother also told me to always be on time mailing my payment because I NEVER want to have to go in person to pay the bill because the road to it only had enough room for one car and I would be in trouble if I met another car…
I love small *area* life. Looking forward to hearing more about yours. *Sangings* and all – we could be neighbors!
I LOVE this post! I am from a SMALL town in Texas. And my hubby’s family lives in Alabama, so I’m familiar with the term “sanging.” Who knows; maybe we’ll end up in Alabama too, and you and I can get together.
I have really missed the blogging world over the past several months and am enjoying doing a bit of catching up. I posted a bunch of pictures of my little cuties today. Stop by if you’re interested!
