Episode 11: Candace Payne (Chewbacca Mom)

Nov 16, 2020

Do you remember Chewbacca Mom? Four minutes of pure joy on Facebook live over four years ago. The woman with the infectious laugh is Candace Payne.

Candace joins me and shares how, just a few weeks before the video went viral, she stepped out in faith and onto a stage and told her story at a conference.

It was on that stage Candace says she felt like she finally belonged. “I knew this is what I’m supposed to be doing. I didn’t even know how to do it — number one, I’ve never been told I could, or that I should and I’ve never been allowed.”

I knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life.

Just a few weeks later — the video goes viral.

Candace shares about serving in a variety of areas of ministry — from worship leader to creative planner — but she never felt like she was a good fit for any of these areas.

But she served — in all manner of areas.
We talk about her speaking style, which Candace refers to as an echo chamber of what God is saying to her. She shares how she is intentional to serve the audience who sits before her — and she leans into God to serve them well.

Candace talks about her calling as a speaker and for all speakers – we have a calling to encourage, strengthen, and comfort those who show up.

Candace Payne

You might know me as “Chewbacca Mom” which is what some media outlets have called me after a Facebook Live video of me wearing a Chewbacca mask went viral (like, super viral, with 160+ million views) and made lots of people laugh. That video took me on a wild adventure and I appeared on shows like “Good Morning America,” “Entertainment Tonight,” and “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” where I got to meet JJ Abrams, y’all!! I was also invited to the headquarters of Lucasfilm (!!!) for a personal tour and to Facebook, one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen – they have an actual park on their roof! If that’s not enough, then Hasbro gave me my own “Chewbacca Mom” action figure that says phrases from the viral video. What?!

After a whirlwind year for me, my amazing stud of a hubs, our two grade-school kiddos and ornery pug, Opal…I’m super blessed to be able to share a message of living the simple joys to my friends and fans and followers around the world on the internet-webs through social media and on my TLCme video series! I would love to hear from you so please keep in touch!
